Press Release

Latin American Masters gallery is proud to present, Cerámica Contemporánea, an exhibition of ceramics by Mexican artist Gustavo Pérez. Despite a modesty of means and scale, Gustavo Pérez’s ceramics have achieved worldwide recognition, including a 2012 retrospective at Museo Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City. The current exhibition, the artist’s first with Latin American Masters, includes twenty-six ceramics in varied formats, including a wall-mounted relief, “Tablero”, an interplay of abstract forms, each a silent testimony to Pérez’s seemingly effortless handling of clay.

Small details are important to Pérez, as he works through variations like a musician improvising on a melody. Lines of extraordinary subtlety appear, incised into the surface of clay, with no superfluous detail. More than containers or receptacles, his forms are supports for his calligraphic drawings. Each work remains a distinct invention, combining symmetry and intuitive sensitivity. Gustavo Pérez’s art suggests a wide range of influences, from Modernist sculpture to the ancestral traditions of Asia and Meso-America. Whatever the
influences, they are fully absorbed and made his own.

Gustavo Pérez’s work is included in the permanent collections of important institutions worldwide, including: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, Mexico; The Museum of Ceramic Art, Shiga, Japan; and The Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec, Canada.
